Mike Borg Memorial Scholarship


In memory of our dear friend, co-Founder, President and CEO, Mike Borg. 1958-2020

The winning applicant must be able to travel to San Antonio, TX for the 2024 USAYESS National Championships to receive the scholarship

Background

The Mike Borg Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of USAYESS Co-Founder and long-time President, Mike Borg. Mike had a passion for youth shooting sports and was always working on new ideas to engage youth and enhance the youth experience in shotgun shooting sports. His energy and personality still resonate strongly within USAYESS. Mike Borg passed away in the Summer of 2020 following complications from an ATV accident.

Purpose

To keep Mike Borg’s memory at forefront and to continue the work Mike started, USA Youth Education in Shooting Sports (USAYESS) is proud to offer the Mike Borg Memorial scholarship to USAYESS high school junior and senior members.

Award

Scholarship Range: $1,000+

Number of Awards: Minimum of 1 per year

Eligibility

  • USAYESS high school junior and senior members advancing into a degree-seeking program who are not full-time employees at the institution are eligible for this award.
  • Applicant must have participated in USAYESS for at least one full year prior to applying and competed in their state championship, Regional championship, and National Championship.
  • Applicants must be in good standing with their High School and maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

Criteria

Applicants will be selected based on the following:

  • Scholastic ability
  • Personal character
  • Have demonstrated leadership experience and involvement in their USAYESS team
  • Demonstrate a commitment to succeed
  • Demonstrate a “Mike-like” attitude in their shooting and education

Application Requirements

  • Applicant must complete all components of the application.
  • Applicant must submit a personal essay, written by the applicant, addressing (in 500-2,500 words):
    • Evidence that the applicant meets the criteria identified for this specific scholarship
    • Why USAYESS should consider the applicant for this scholarship
    • Why shotgun shooting sports is important to the applicant
    • How the applicant got started in shotgun shooting sports
    • What the applicant's course of study will be, and what led them to this course of study
    • Applicants goals and plans are after college
    • Attention will be given to the essay’s structure and grammar
  • Applicant must submit a current high school transcript
  • Applicant must submit three letters of recommendation: one from a teacher, one from a coach, one from a community member (Community member cannot be a family member)
  • Applicant is asked to submit a professional, hi-resolution photo (headshots only) – you may submit a high school senior graduation photo

Selection

Electronic notification will be sent to confirm award submissions have been received. A confidential National Scholarships Committee, appointed annually by the USAYESS Board of Directors, will review materials to make the selection. One recipient will be chosen unless otherwise noted for the specific award. One physical award will be given to the recipient, who will be recognized during the awards ceremony at the National Junior Clay Target Championships and in subsequent publications.
